Professor Johnston-Ak specialises in Postgraduate Studies, Research, and Policy.
Before moving to Whakatāne, she was a faculty member in Education at both Auckland and Massey University. At Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, she played a pivotal role in developing the School of Indigenous Graduate studies, the graduate programmes (including the doctoral programme), advancing research for the wananga (including PBRF), and contributing to programme development and research.
Expanding her expertise, she now includes Indigenous Studies and Humanities in her academic portfolio. She teaches at both Bachelor and Postgraduate levels, supervises research students, and mentors' undergraduate staff in their qualification and research journeys.
Professor Johnston-Ak is an active researcher, publishing nationally and internationally. She also serves on research panels and is a monitor for the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.
