Programme Admission Criteria for the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 2) are as follows:
- Minimum age: 16 years
- Minimum qualification: Open entry
- Special Admission may be granted by the NPC of the programme to applicants without a formal qualification, where an applicant is over the age of 20 years at the start of the programme and they can provide sufficient evidence of work experience, skill, education, commitment, and support to successfully undertake the programme of study.
- Assurance appropriate vaccination requirements are met.
- Te Reo and tikanga understandings would be helpful to applicants.
General Admission:
An applicant who wishes to gain admission to study at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi must be a domestic applicant, defined by the Education and Training Act 2020 as:
- A New Zealand citizen; or
- The holder of a residence class visa granted under the Immigration Act 2009; or
- A person of a class or description of persons required by the Minister, by notice in the Gazette, to be treated as if they are not an international tauira.
Documentation supporting admission to the programme must meet the requirements specified by the Tertiary Education Commission and the Enrolments Policy document and described in the approved tauira validation business process.
All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level.

If English is not the applicant’s first language, he/she may also be required to provide evidence of their English language skills as listed below.
- IELTS 5.0 Academic/General (no lower than 5.0 in all subtests/ bands).
- Note: IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test. Admission may be granted at the discretion of the Head of Health and Wellbeing if the level of English is assessed as satisfactory.
Health Status
Candidates are required in their application to indicate whether they have had/or currently have a mental and/or health condition that may prevent them from entering the programme or give them difficulties after entry to assist support planning.
Criminal Convictions
Candidates are required to indicate in their application whether they have been convicted of a criminal
offence and complete Police vetting processes as part of the application process and during the duration of enrolment. Some types of criminal convictions may result in difficulty to obtain clinical experiences and therefore meet the requirements to pass the programme.
All applicants must be able to:
- meet the entry requirements for the New Zealand Certificate of Health and Wellbeing (Level 2); AND
- have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at level 2; AND
- have access to a computer, and have sufficient digital literacy skills to participate in all learning activities and submit assessments using required technologies; AND
- agree to participate in all wānanga; AND
- pass the police check (including a Children’s Worker Safety Check; VCA)
