Scientific Mātauranga Māori Environmental Studies
The level 5 certificate in scientific mātauranga Māori environmental studies provides students with a broad range of skills and knowledge to examine traditional and contemporary models of science relating to the environment. 

The programme aims to:

  • provide opportunities for tauira to gain further knowledge of their own geographical location and significant landmarks within their whānau, hapū or iwi boundaries;
  • retain knowledge of mātauranga Māori practices, processes and solutions within an environmental context;
  • retain knowledge of mātauranga Māori that is intrinsic within karakia, waiata, whakataukī/whakatauākī, purākau, pakiwaitara etc;
  • acquire knowledge about contemporary and scientific mātauranga Māori practices, processes and solutions within an environmental context;
  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of environmental legislation to inform whānau, hapū and iwi;
  • support whānau, hapū and iwi with their environmental aspirations;
  • develop graduates who can support their whānau, hapū and iwi in finding appropriate solutions to environmental issues or concerns;
  • create more Māori graduates who have skills and knowledge in science;
  • promote the development and validity of Māori values, principles and mātauranga Māori in the field of scientific environmental studies;
  • create graduates that are equipped with knowledge and skills such as research, self-management, critical thinking, and good work ethic in order to be successful in higher tertiary study or gain employment in the environment industry.

PUT101 Kōwai Ako 1: Whanaungatanga - Effective Relationships through Communication

Course Type:  Core

Description:  Tauira will be able to develop effective communication skills and use a range of strategies to establish, maintain and manage relationships and reciprocal responsibilities

 

PUT102 Kōwai Ako 2: Kaitiakitanga - Traditional and Contemporary Kaitiaki Roles

Course Type:  Core

Description:  Tauira will be able to develop strategies to protect and manage the local environment in accordance with mātauranga Māori and mātauranga taiao knowledge. Tauira will demonstrate how resources can be protected, managed, and sustained utilising legislation to support the aspirations of whānau, hapū and iwi.

 

PUT103 Kōwai Ako 3: Pūkengatanga - Traditional and Contemporary Practices and Solutions

Course Type:  Core

Description:  Tauira will be able to apply mātauranga Māori, mātauranga taiao and contemporary theories, management, and practices to provide solutions and processes to local environment concerns and issues. 

 

PUT104 Kōwai Ako 4: Rangatiratanga - Environmental Aspirations and Needs of whānau, hapū and iwi

Course Type:  Core

Description:  Tauira will be able to exercise and examine their own rights regarding current and future environment aspirations and needs of whānau, hapū and iwi. Tauira will also develop a future based environmental framework using both mātauranga Māori and science theories that align with whānau, hapū and iwi aspirations.
