Wai Ora (Kaupae 3)

A certificate that provides a foundational understanding of kaitiakitanga around bodies of water and how it can be applied using mātauranga Māori. Become an ‘eco warrior’ looking into sustainability of our taiao and environment.
This level 3 programme will provide the skills and knowledge to understand and apply sustainability practices to coastal and freshwater bodies based on mātauranga Māori within local environments.

Graduates will gain the skills and knowledge to care for, develop, sustain, enhance, and manage their own environment for the benefit of marae, whānau, hapū and iwi to support and guide current and future generations.

  • Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
  • Identify the whakapapa of bodies of water surrounding marae and other Māori communities throughout Aotearoa
  • Develop strategies to protect and manage freshwater and marine ecosystems in accordance with mātauranga Māori, contemporary theories, and practices to sustain freshwater and marine ecosystems for future generations
  • Identify the rights, interests, and responsibilities of marae, hapū and iwi regarding freshwater and marine bodies of water

WAI301 Wai Ora-ā-Tāne
  • Course type: Core
    Description: In this kōwae ako, tauira will learn the importance of whakapapa, relationships, and geographical boundaries. They will also learn about the importance of a body of water to whānau, hapū, iwi or community.
WAI302 Wairākei
  • Course type: Core
    Description: In this kōwae ako, tauira will develop broad strategies to protect and manage freshwater and marine ecosystems in accordance with mātauranga Māori from a whānau, hapū, iwi lens.
WAI303 Waimatua

  • Course type: Core
    Description: In this kōwae ako, tauira apply mātauranga Māori to sustain ecosystems surrounding water including gathering kai. They will also look at how contemporary theories and practices can be applied to ecosystems surrounding water.
WAI304 Waimana
  • Course type: Core
    Description: In this kōwae ako tauira will identify the rights, interests, and responsibilities of whānau, hapū and iwi regarding bodies of water.
