To gain entry to Te Tohu Paetahi Ako: Bachelor of Education (Teaching), applicants must meet the following:
For those under 20 years of age:
- hold University Entrance (UE) or a recognised equivalent such as International Baccalaureate or Cambridge International, or
- be able to demonstrate to the satisfaction of Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi that they have the skills and ability to study at a tertiary level.
For those 20 years of age and over without UE:
- be able to demonstrate to the satisfaction of Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi that they can study at a tertiary level.
For applicants without UE (or equivalent) Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi will also take into consideration letters of support giving relevant experiences (for examples schools, churches, community-focussed charities, youth sporting providers). Applicants without UE will also be assessed for their suitability during the interview process.
Literacy and Numeracy Competency
Prior to entry, all applicants will be assessed for their literacy and numeracy competency. The standard required must be no lower than the equivalent to UE in literacy and numeracy.
This will be made available through the TEC Tertiary Education Commission’s Literacy and Numeracy for Adults Assessment Tool (LNAAT)
From 2027, applicants must meet this minimum requirement prior to being accepted into the programme.
Additional Information Requirements
Letters of support
All applicants must provide supportive references from two appropriate people within the community and the field of education, for example School Principal, Kaumatua.
Criminal Convictions Disclosure, Police Vetting, and Health Status.
(a) Prior to entering the programme, students will be required to:
i. Complete and submit the Criminal Convictions Disclaimer form.
ii. Complete and submit the Police Vetting Information form – Authorisation to Disclose Information, which allows police vetting to occur.
iii. Provide evidence of their Health Status (Vaccination Certificate), if required.
iv. Provide appropriate police vetting certificates from overseas jurisdictions if the applicant has resided in another country for more than one year within the last ten years prior to application.
(b) The rationale for completing the Police Vetting Form – Authorisation to Disclose Information is:
i. To ensure compliance with legislative requirements
ii. To confirm the information provided by student on the Criminal Convictions Disclaimer Form.
iii. To authorise the NZ Police Licensing & Vetting Service Centre to disclose any interaction that a student has had with NZ Police in any context to Te Whare Wānanga ō Awanuiārangi
(c) Decisions made about admission to Te Tohu Paetahi Ako - Bachelor of Education (Teaching) will take account of any conviction with reference to the:
i. Severity
ii. Recency
iii. age at offending
iv. pattern of offending
(d) Once enrolled into the programme, Tauira must inform the National Programme Co-ordinator if their conviction status changes.
(e) The Health Status confirmation recognises any requirement to be fully vaccinated to work in schools/Early Childhood Education settings, should such a mandate exist
Selection
Applicants wanting to enrol in Te Tohu Paetahi Ako - Bachelor of Education (Teaching) will be required to engage in an interview as part of the selection process.
English Language Competency
English language competencies are specific by Teaching Council Aotearoa New Zealand. Prior to entry, applicants must demonstrate English language competency by providing one of the Council’s approved evidence of English language competency, as follows:
- New Zealand University Entrance literacy credits at either NCEA level 2 or 3;
- New Zealand University Entrance;
- New Zealand tertiary entrance qualification gained on completing senior secondary school prior to the introduction of the current University Entrance;
- International Baccalaureate full diploma in English medium (24 points minimum).
- Cambridge International Examinations minimum 120 points on the UCAS Tariff plus meeting the CIE literacy requirements;
- All primary schooling and at least three years secondary schooling completed in the English language and while living in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States of America or South Africa [candidates from South Africa must also provide South African Matriculation Certificate Minimum D pass in English (higher grade) OR South African Senior Certificate Minimum D pass in English (higher grade)];
- Six years of education comprising secondary schooling to at least year 12 and at least two years of successful tertiary education, taught in English as the primary language of instruction and through face-to-face learning and assessment such as tutorials and labs completed in the English language and while living in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States of America or South Africa [candidates from South Africa must also provide South African Matriculation Certificate Minimum D pass in English (higher grade) OR South African Senior Certificate Minimum D pass in English (higher grade)];
- Awarded a Bachelor’s degree (with or without Honours), Master’s degree or other qualification at NZQF level 7 or above which took two or more years of full-time study to complete, and a. was taught in English as the primary language of instruction and through face-to-face learning and assessment such as tutorials, presentations, seminars, and supervisory meetings, and b. the qualification was gained while living in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States or South Africa;
- Awarded Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA);
- Awarded Trinity College London Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CertTESOL);
- Achieved an outcome in one of the approved tests which is equivalent to or better than those specified (see table below) within the past two years:

Māori Language Competency
The development and extension of Māori language capabilities is encouraged throughout Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi and is an identifying factor of Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi programmes.
The nature of delivery of Te Tohu Paetahi Ako - Bachelor of Education (Teaching) and some courses, or parts of courses, in the Māori language, requires a level of Māori language competency appropriate and conducive to success in programme completion.
Potential Tauira with no te reo Māori are welcome to apply for programme entry, as they will be placed into the first-year elective course appropriate to their level of te reo competency.
Tauira applying for the programme will have an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to, and competency in, te reo Māori during the interview process.
Tauira will be supported whatever their level of competency of Te Reo Māori.
