Entry to Te Ōhanga Mataora: Bachelor of Health Sciences Māori Nursing is open to applicants who meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum age: 18 years

Minimum qualification - Applicants must meet both the Academic and Suitability entry requirements below

  1. Meet the requirements for fitness for registration in accordance with Section 16 of the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act (2003) and as determined by the Te Kaunihera Tapuhi o Aotearoa | Nursing Council of New Zealand for registration as a nurse in terms of ‘good character’ and being ‘fit and proper’; (see Section 6.2.1(a) to (h) of these regulations - Professional Nursing Registration – for the criteria) and either:
  2. Fulfil academic admission requirements in National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) - see below for details: OR
  3. Hold successful completion of an approved Pre-entry Foundation programme OR;
  4. Special Admission may be granted to applicants without a formal qualification, where an applicant is over the age of 20 years at the start of the programme, and they can provide sufficient evidence of work experience, skill, education, commitment, and support to successfully undertake the programme of study AND;
  5. Must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at tertiary level 5.

If English is not the applicant’s first language, he/she may also be required to provide evidence of their English language skills as listed below:

IELTS 6.5 Academic (no lower than 6.5 in all subtests/ bands).

Note: IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test. Admission may be granted at the discretion of the Director of Nursing if the level of English is assessed as satisfactory.

 

NCEA Requirements

NCEA Level 3:

Three subjects - at Level 3, made up of 14 credits each, in three approved subjects

Literacy - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of:

5 credits in reading

5 credits in writing

Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of:

achievement standards – specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects,

or

  • three unit standards: 26623, 26626, 26627
Suitability entry requirements

Attend an information session or interview to determine:

  • How prepared you are to undertake tertiary study
  • If you have a genuine desire to engage in te reo me ōna tikanga
  • Ability to meet the Health Practitioners Act 2003 (if applicable) as well as any NCNZ registration board requirements in terms of being fit for registration

Applicants must be able to demonstrate:

  • appropriate interpersonal communication skills
  • personal presentation
  • maturity and a positive attitude
  • commitment and motivation to succeed
  • The suitability of a candidate will also be assessed with reference to health declaration, referee reports, health assessment and/or screening and police vetting results.

Application Process

Applicants seeking entry into Te Ōhanga Mataora must provide acceptable evidence that they meet the following criteria:

  • A genuine desire to undertake a career in nursing within Māori communities; and a willingness to engage in Te Reo Me Tikanga
  • Meet the requirements for fitness for registration in accordance with Section 16 of the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003 and as determined by the Nursing Council of Aotearoa New Zealand for registration as a nurse in terms of good character and being fit and proper see Section 621a of these regulations.
All applicants must provide:
  • Health Declaration:  A medical certificate may be requested from applicants
  • Declaration of any criminal offences: To satisfy Nursing Council requirements for registration, applicants are required to declare all criminal offences and complete a ‘Consent to Disclosure of Information’ Exception form, which is forwarded to the Licensing & Vetting Service Centre of the New Zealand Police.
  • Police Vetting:  All enrolments in the programme are subject to satisfactory police vetting this may take several months. If the results of your police check are unsatisfactory, your enrolment will be withdrawn.
  • Health Screening:  On acceptance into the programme applicants will be required to complete health screening for Chicken Pox Measles Hepatitis B Rubella and Tuberculosis.
  • First Aid & CPR certificate:  Tauira enrolling on Te Ohanga Mataora will need to provide evidence of completion of a First Aid and CPR Certificate preferably prior to the commencement of the programme, or within six months of beginning the programme.
