CEO Professor Wiremu Doherty appointed to NZQA Board
Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi congratulates its CEO Professor Wiremu Doherty on his appointment to the Board of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA)/Mana Tohu Mātauranga o Aotearoa.
The NZQA, one of the agencies that manage and regulate the education system in New Zealand, is headed by a Board appointed by the Minister of Education and brings experience from industry, community, and education sectors. Professor Doherty’s term on the Board covers a period of three years, effective from 1 September 2023.
Professor Doherty has a long-standing relationship with the NZQA. He is currently chairperson of the NZQA’s Ngā Kaitūhono/Māori Advisory Board, a group established to ensure the NZQA’s approach to mātauranga Māori is compatible with Māori values, consistent with Māori expectations, and complementary to other validation processes, including those that may be established by Māori. Professor Doherty has also contributed to the development of NZQA’s Te Rautaki Māori as a member of the Māori Reference Group and has been involved in the development of NCEA Te Reo Māori Level 1 and 2.
“I look forward to continuing to work with the NZQA and other education agencies to support the improvement of education in New Zealand and help ensure we have a system that is of high quality and functions efficiently to benefit our learners,” says Professor Doherty.
With a strong connection to his Tūhoe and Ngāti Awa heritage, extensive experience in the education sector, and significant knowledge of kaupapa Māori initiatives and Mātauranga-ā-Iwi, Professor Doherty joined Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi in 2009 and has been leading the Wānanga as CEO since 2015. His other leadership roles include Chair of Ngā Kaitūhono, Chair of Toi economic development agency, and co-chair of a Sector Reference Group at the Tertiary Education Commission.
Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi looks forward to seeing the impacts of Professor Doherty’s contribution as NZQA Board member in the months and years to come.
