Wānanga Academic Leads Judging Panel at Te Matatini
Dr. Turuhira Hare, an esteemed Māori academic at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, will serve as Kaiwhiriwhiri Matua (Head Judge) for the prestigious Te Matatini o te Kāhui Maunga 2025, leading a panel of 51 judges.
“This role carries immense responsibility, and I feel deeply honoured to serve Te Ao Māori at Te Matatini. But it’s not just about me. I stand alongside a panel of experienced judges, each bringing a wealth of knowledge, and a shared commitment to our kaupapa. Together, we ensure that every performance is recognised for its excellence, its connection to tikanga, and its contribution to the enduring legacy of kapa haka.”
A renowned leader in both Māori performing arts and education, Dr Turuhira’s journey spans several decades. She first performed with the Ruatoki Māori Cultural Group in the late 1960s, later stepping into a leadership role in the 1970s.
Her extensive kapa haka experience includes judging at Te Hui Ahurei ā Tūhoe, the Rangitāiki Primary Kapa Haka Competition, the National Primary and Secondary Kapa Haka Competitions, and more than a decade on the Te Matatini Judges’ panel.
Awanuiārangi has been central to her academic journey, where she earned her teaching degree, master’s degree, and professional doctorate. Now a Senior Lecturer in the School of Indigenous Graduate Studies, she continues to mentor and inspire the next generation of Māori scholars.
Reflecting on her lifelong commitment to kapa haka and education, she shares how these experiences have shaped her perspective on the responsibilities of judging at Te Matatini .
"Kapa haka and education have been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. Te Matatini isn’t just about performing; it’s about identity, whakapapa, and keeping our reo and stories alive.
"As both an experienced performer and a judge, I know how much time, effort, and heart each rōpū puts into their performance. It’s not just about the technical side; it’s about recognising the wairua, the mātauranga, and the way kapa haka continues to evolve while staying true to its roots. Our job as judges is to ensure every team is given the respect they deserve and to uphold the mana of this art form for generations to come.”
As a major sponsor of Te Matatini o te Kāhui Maunga 2025, Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi celebrates the excellence of all performing rōpū and wishes them every success. Committed to the future of Māori performing arts, Awanuiārangi offers Undergraduate and Postgraduate studies in this field. For more information, see links below.
