Innovation, advanced technology and cultural design elements are features of the campus built by Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi to help transform educational outcomes for Māori.
The new facilities were opened in December 2012 in Whakatāne, headquarters for the institution’s educational activities throughout Aotearoa and internationally. The complex features the high-tech Mark Laws Media Centre, teaching suites and lecture theatres with advanced video conferencing facilities that will connect students, lecturers and their peers nationally and worldwide.
Through its investment in high-speed fibre, Awanuiārangi is one of the most technologically connected institutions in the country, which allows it to explore new ways of engagement in higher education. In conjunction with the Mark Laws Media Centre, this has expanded capacity and capability to continue developing distance and online learning. The development phase includes implementing new research into the pedagogy behind online delivery.
The new campus includes a Noho Centre, built to support the institution’s noho wānanga (immersion learning) approach, which enables 24-hour learning within a tikanga Māori (Māori cultural) environment. The flagship building is the Te Kōputu Kōrero a Tā Hirini Moko Mead (library and information commons) which includes special collections, modern student commons and study areas. There is also an executive suite, boardroom and offices.
