New Zealand Certificate in Study and Employment Pathways

This programme aims to prepare you for tertiary study and help your employment opportunities. Graduates will develop and improve practical study skills for tertiary study to support their success when entering undergraduate level study or their chosen career, including developing inquiring minds, self-confidence and introduce tauira to Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori.

The certificate will: 

  • enhance your study skills to support your success in future studies
  • increase your literacy and academic writing
  • increase your numeracy and confidence in mathematics
  • support your understanding and application of science
  • introduce you to a range of information sources and fundamental research skills
  • develop your negotiation, conflict resolution and teamwork strategies
  • enhance your personal and professional skills
  • explore your career interest in nursing, teaching, humanities, environmental studies, mātauranga Māori and Māori performing arts.
  • increase your confidence and knowledge in te reo and tikanga Māori

CEP401 Te Reo Me Ōna Tikanga

15 credits

Course Type: Core

  • Description: This course develops tauira ability to apply Te Reo Māori me ōna Tikanga within their chosen career or field of study. Tauira will learn to confidently use karakia, prepare and recite mihimihi for professional and educational settings, and apply kupu, rerenga kōrero, kīwaha, whakataukī, and Māori sentence structures relevant to workplace and tertiary contexts.

CEP402 Advanced Tertiary Study, Career and Computer Skills

15 credits

Course Type: Core

  • Description: This course equips tauira with the skills to self-manage, navigate, and lead their educational journey while building personal and professional integrity. Tauira will engage with diverse sources, apply digital tools, analyse professional and cultural standards, create a personalised study and career plan, and develop interview skills for employment or tertiary education pathways.

CEP403 Hauora Māori

15 credits

Course Type: Core

  • Description: This course develops tauira understanding of Māori models of practice relevant to their chosen career or field of study. Tauira will explore how these models support personal, whānau, hapū, and iwi well-being, while also evaluating the impact of legislation on their application. The course emphasises culturally grounded approaches that enhance professional practice and well-being outcomes.

CEP404 Science and Mathematics for an Identified Context

15 credits

Course Type: Elective

  • Description: This course introduces tauira to science and mathematics relevant to their chosen career or field of study. Tauira will explore health science, human biology, body systems, chemistry, and mathematical concepts applied in these disciplines. Other branches of science may also be introduced. The course builds knowledge and communication skills to apply science and mathematics effectively in professional and academic contexts.

CEP405 Introduction to Indigenous Studies, Politics and Indigenous Development

15 credits

Course Type: Elective

  • Description: This course explores theories of ethnicity, indigeneity, and culture within historical and contemporary contexts. Tauira will examine politics, political systems, and government structures, analysing their impacts on Indigenous and Māori development. The course also investigates labelling, identity, and the implications of political constructs, comparing traditional and contemporary Māori social and political organisations.

CEP406 Mātakitaki ki te Taiao – Observing our Environment 

15 credits

Course Type: Elective

  • Description: This elective provides a bicultural introduction to environmental practices and theories, serving as a pathway into higher-level environmental studies. Tauira will explore sustainability through Māori cosmology, local and global issues, and contemporary technologies. The course highlights traditional knowledge, cultural narratives, and significant sites, fostering environmental awareness grounded in both Māori values and modern perspectives.

CEP407 Māori Performing Arts in Aotearoa: An Introductory Exploration of Haka Theatre

15 credits

Course Type: Elective

Description: This course introduces tauira to haka theatre as a contemporary form of Māori performance that combines haka, Māori movement, pūrākau, and cultural practice. Framed as an evolving space where indigenous knowledge and creative expression intersect, tauira will examine the cultural significance of haka and explore how it informs devised performance, movement, and storytelling. Emphasising collaboration, tikanga, and kaupapa Māori values, the course fosters both cultural respect and creative exploration. Tauira will gain foundational skills in haka-informed performance and develop the ability to reflect critically on cultural and creative processes within haka theatre.
