New Zealand Diploma in Content Creation (Broadcasting) Level 5
The world of broadcasting and content creating is ever evolving.
With state-of-the-art technology and facilities at the NZ Radio Training School at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, you could learn the tricks of the trade.
Hands on learning sees you write, engineer and produce your own content on a range of platforms including radio, screen, podcast and digital media.
The programme also covers te reo me ōna tikanga, the different contexts within which iwi and mainstream broadcasting exists and understanding the commercial arena.
Graduates will be able to:
- Research and analyse the social, political, economic, cultural and historical contexts to inform practice in a relevant media environment.
- Apply a range of creative and technical processes to create and produce content for use across a range of media platforms.
- Apply relevant business practices to distribute content to an identified audience in a relevant media environment.
- Apply and reflect on professional skills and cultural competencies to operate effectively in a relevant media environment.

Course Type: Core
Description: ‘Ko te kai a te rangatira, he kōrero’ - ‘The food of a chief, is dialogue’
The kōwae ako will allow tauira to research, and analyse various social, political, economic, cultural and historical contexts in iwi and other radio broadcasting environments. Tauira will gain practical skills in writing and interview techniques including identifying valid, reliable and authentic sources.
CC5002 Creating Media Content
Course Type: Core
Description: ‘Whiria te tangata, whiria te reo’ - ‘Weave the people together so that they may connect under the same language’.
The kōwae ako will provide an introduction to the creation and production of a range of media platforms including radio broadcasting, social media, and/or podcasting. Tauira will focus on applying te reo Māori and tikanga in the production of content.
CC5003 Business Practices for Production
Course Type: Core
Description: ‘He toi whakairo, he mana tangata’ - ‘Where there is artistic excellence, there is mana tangata’.
The kōwae ako will provide an overview of multimedia and social media platforms within either the iwi or another radio broadcasting environment. It will cover content creation, digital tools, regulatory frameworks, and marketing strategies essential for effective engagement and sustainability in the digital age.
CC5004 Applied Broadcasting
Course Type: Core
Description: ‘He tangata kī tahi’ - ‘A person of a few words’
The kōwae ako is a culmination of the whole programme and is designed to showcase the knowledge and skills of the tauira in a Māori and/or non-Māori radio broadcasting environment. Tauira will write scripts, translate ideas into visual storytelling, developing practical experience in the various stages of a broadcast production.
